Hey gang, haven’t posted a news update in a while. Thought I’d fill you in on what’s been happening.
First up, it being Friday, there is a new comic for you! Go read it here.
Apologies for being slack on updates recently. I’ve been pretty busy with various other projects and to be frank, the webcomic is somewhere near the bottom of my list of priorities. That said, things are calming down a lot now and I should be able to revert to some sort of regular update schedule again soon. I’ve had three weeks off work to catch up on everything and the end is in sight!
So what HAVE I been working on?
Anthology submissions, man! I finished one up last week that I’m quite happy with for a new anthology called T4L, which is all about transport in London. My friend and some times comics collaborator Virgil is the driving force behind this anthology and also wrote a six page story for me to draw. It has been great fun to work on and I’ve really enjoyed working outside of my usual style for this. Really looking forward to seeing what other people come up with for it.
The other big project I’ve been working on is one that I am VERY excited about. Mitch Clem, of Nothing Nice To Say fame, contacted me and asked if I’d like to contribute a short story to his punk-rock anthology, As You Were. I nearly wet myself when I saw that email since I’ve been a big fan of Mitch’s work since I was about sixteen with NN2S being the first webcomic I ever properly read.
This project has been an absolute blast to work on. I think it shows too. I’d not even written it on Tuesday morning and I’m almost done pencilling it already. Again, really looking forward to seeing the final product. It’s cram-packed full of amazing comic artists who work within the punk community and I’m thrilled to be considered amongst that group. You can pick up the first issue here.
Final thing, conventions and whatever.
It was May MCM recently and I was incredibly lucky to be there. I’d missed out on table in the first round of bookings and was facing either missing out completely or perching on the end of Jude and Alan’s table for the weekend. Thankfully, there was a last minute cancellation and I had my own full table all to myself. Thank God!
And what a weekend it was! Broke all my records and targets over the three days and exceeded any expectation I had of the show. I even managed to sell out of Scene City 1… TWICE! I’ve also finally shifted the last of Paper Science and so cleared some table space for more stuff at future cons. Thank you so much to everyone who came down that weekend to make it the best con ever for Orful Comics! And thank you also to all the amazing artists around me that I bought things off. The un-read pile of shame is looking very healthy right now. Bring on October MCM!
While still on the subject of MCM, you may like to know that I was featured in a podcast! Stephen Lacey of the 20 Minute Longbox has decided to record a few special editions of the cast focussing on the small press exhibitors at MCM. Click here to hear Stephen talk to myself, Matt Dyson, Michael Georgiou, Francesca Dare and Tony Lee about comics and stuff.
I have a short break between conventions now. Next up will be LFCC at London Earl’s Court 2 from 5 – 7 July. Had a great time there last year when we were at Kensington Olympia (damn Olympics) and hoping for another strong show this year. Hope to see some familiar faces there and also plenty of new ones.
Anyways, enough rambling from me. Time to do some actual work!
Peace
-Rob
